Private Lessons

There are three Boston Exam Schools – Boston Latin Academy, Boston Latin School, and the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science.  All Boston Exam School applicants are required to sit for the MAP Growth Test as part of the application process.  NWEA’s Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth Test measures student achievement in math, reading and language usage. Items on the MAP Growth Test are strongly aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework grade-level standards, and test students on material they have learned in school.

MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test, which means that it adapts the level of difficulty based on the responses provided by the student. The test will start at the child’s current grade level and adjust the difficulty based on their performance. The assessment also includes several built-in accommodations for students with disabilities and English learners.

Students have two opportunities to take the MAP Growth Test to apply to the BPS exam schools – once in the Spring and once in the Fall.  If the student takes the test twice, BPS will use the higher achievement percentile score in each subject area (Reading & Math) for the application. The student must complete both sections of the test in order to receive a score.

Our tutors have outstanding credentials in preparing students for standardized tests, including the ISEE, SSAT, MAP, HSPT, ACT, and MCAS. Our MAP Growth Test tutors tailor their instruction to address each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses. Tutors develop a customized plan to prepare students for the content of the exam, including up-to-date strategies to excel on all sections of the test. Throughout instruction, official MAP Growth practice tests are administered and materials are provided to support student skills in:

  • Number sense and operations
  • Algebra
  • Spatial sense
  • Data analysis
  • Author’s purpose and tone
  • Text structure
  • Analyzing literature
  • Creative writing techniques
  • Developing and supporting arguments
